Chapter 11 – Closing In

Shortly after eight on Monday morning, Mickey, who was prepared for his class, dialed the number for the office of Carl Hillman. Frank, relaxing on the other side of the kitchen table with a steaming mug of black coffee, was taking off the day at Camp Washtenaw. Needing to hear what Hillman had to say. Mickey and Frank were contemplating the next step against Herman Fischer.

Hillman came on the line. “Yes, Mickey, good morning. How are you?”

“I’m fine, Carl. Do you have a few minutes?”

Hillman sounded like he was prepared for Mickey’s call. “Actually, I was going to call you.”

“What do you have in mind?”

“As I told you, we have been conducting employee interviews as part of our security process. We are tracking our ‘suspicious activity’ question. One result was the note from Jacky Murphy, the little person who rooms with Dickie Turner. I believe Frank said Turner was taking your class.”

“Correct.” Mickey was watching his best friend sip hot java. Picking up his own mug, he sat down and took a sip. Out of the corner of his eye he could see Ike lying by Frank’s side, almost like the shepherd was listening too.

“… so far we have more than two hundred responses about suspicious activity, and we keep following up. Tuttle said you are looking for connections to the Baxter professor, Fischer.”

“Do you have something?”

“Yes, but it’s what we might get today. Andy Thornbeck, my assistant who works primarily in accounting, is scheduled to talk with Molly Schwarz at nine-thirty. Andy takes careful notes, but we also have a Dictaphone going in case we conclude the session needs to be transcribed. In that case, a secretary will type up a summary from the cylinders.” Hillman paused, and Mickey figured he was smiling at the efficiency of his office.

“Carl, we want to hear the Schwarz interview. Is that possible?”

“Yes. That’s why I’m calling. Each conference room has a microphone next to the Dictaphone in case I need to listen from my office even as the person is talking.”

“Good. I’ll bring Frank, and we’ll be at your office shortly after nine.”

“We will be prepared,” Carl replied, and the line went dead.

Mickey hung up the receiver, dumped the lukewarm coffee from his green mug into the sink, and poured a fresh cup from the percolator. Sitting down, he added a teaspoonful of sugar and spooned in cream. Leaning back, he sipped the brew, nodded, and eyed Frank.

“Hillman has an interview scheduled in about an hour with Molly Schwarz. I think we need to hear what she’s got to say.”

“Good enough, pal!”

Frank smiled, finished his coffee, flicked open his lighter, and torched his first Camel of the day. It was eight-fifteen and the sounds of cars passing and students talking as they walked to classes filtered in the open front door. Occasionally Ike’s ears would pop up, but no suspicious sounds came from outside. The sun was shining brightly, the temperature had already climbed above sixty-five, and both men were thinking about the Fischer puzzle.
